*Jan Frederik Helmers (March 7, 1767 - February 26, 1813), was a Dutch poet in the French era, son of a very wealthy Amsterdam bricklayer, stone buyer and broker. In addition to the family business, he engaged in literature. He was a member of the patriotic Amsterdam literary society “Concordia et Libertate,” based in Kalverstraat.
The Helmers streets (First, Second and Third Helmersstraat) were built around 1891-1902. Other streets in the neighborhood were also named after writers and poets. The first streets were named in 1883. The main street at right angles to Helmersstraat is First Constantijn Huygensstraat, which has been used by streetcar line 3 since 1902. Parallel to it is the Second Constantijn Huygensstraat, with a former entrance to the Wilhelmina Hospital (1891-1983). The main entrance to this hospital was on Eerste Helmersstraat. The new neighborhood also became known as the Dichtersbuurt or the Literary Quarter.
